The Core

A New Newsletter for Librarians and Media Specialists

December 2009

This is it: The Core, a newsletter providing information about H. W. Wilson’s Core Collection Series and related resources and services.

What are the Core Collections?

Like The Artist Formerly Known as Prince, these are the databases formerly known as Wilson Standard Catalogs. A history of 100 years is not a bad record. The first of the Core Collections, then known as Children’s Catalog, was published in 1909, when the Wilson Company was still in Minneapolis.

The Core Collections are collection development and readers’ advisory tools that generations of librarians have depended on. They are:

Children's Core Collection
Middle & Junior Core Collection
Senior High Core Collection
Public Library Core Collection: Nonfiction
Fiction Core Collection
Graphic Novels
Nonbook Materials Core Collection

The point is this: experienced librarians and subject specialists from around the country advise us on titles. We compile a list of “must have” books for the small and medium-sized library and keep it up to date day by day on Wilson Web, with full cataloging, annotations, link to book reviews, and much more.

SCHOOL-LIBRARIES.NET

The H.W. Wilson Company is privileged to host and manage School-Libraries.net, the largest directory of school library Web sites in the world:
http://www.corecollections.net/SL/school_libraries_home.htm
There are school libraries listed in every state and territory and in 35 other countries. To register school libraries go to:
http://www.standardcatalogs.com/forms/contact.htm
During November we listed 36 new libraries:
http://www.corecollections.net/SL/new.htm
We are assisted in keeping this directory up to date by a small group of dedicated people.

Oliver Withstandly checks every new site and passes it on for inclusion. We also have state coordinators for a few states who check the links for their state to see that they are still active and frequently find the new URL. They also act as our ambassadors in their states. We have coordinators in Arkansas, California, Indiana, Maryland, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Wisconsin, and Australia, and two in Canada. If you are interested in helping, please contact Ray Barber at rbarber@hwwilson.com.

BEST LISTS

Best Lists are very important to us. We consider every book that makes a Best List and include in the Core Collections those that are most suitable for small and medium-sized libraries. In this section of the newsletter you will find, each month, a discussion of the latest Best Lists together with links when they are available. Usually we will list all bests lists found during the past month, but we are now in Best Book Season, November through February, we are limiting ourselves to those particularly worthy of your attention. A full list can be found at www.CoreCollections.net.

A FAREWELL TO KIRKUS

Kirkus Reviews that published their first issue in 1933, ceased publication today. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirkus_Reviews
Publishing about 5,000 reviews a year, it was a major source of information for many librarians, book editors and book store owners. They published both adult and children’s reviews and were known for their wit and insight and were often the first to review publications. We thank the editors and staff at Kirkus for years of dependable reviews.

The demise of Kirkus Reviews, Kliatt and a number of newspaper book review sections makes the work of the Core Collections more important than ever to librarians as they select books and other library materials.
